I N T R O D U C T I O N : The Circle Mining Office started to function at Phulbani from 12.11.1987, consequent upon bifurcation of Ganjam-Phulbani Circle,Berhampur. The office is presently functioning in its Departmental Buildings from 9.5.1993. The main activity of this office is to look after development of available Mineral sources of this district by way of processing Mineral concession applications for prospecting Licence Mining Lease and Quarry lease, Survey and demarcation of granted areas under Mineral Concession Rule,1960. inspection of Mining leases/quarries, Assessment and Collection of Mining Revenue in respect of Major and Mining Minerals,checking of un-authorised Mining activity in Kandhamal and Boudh district.
SANCTION STRENGTH : There are 19 posts sanctioned to function in this Mining Office. Mining Officer is the Head of office who is also working as O.I.C. Mining Section of Collectorate,Kandhamal.
MINERALS IN KANDHAMAL DISTRICT : Deposit of Graphite,Manganese, Coal,Bauxite, Chinaclay, Lime stone, Semi precious stones have been reported in Kandhamal district. Their locations are given below :
GRAPHITE : Deposit of Graphite have been reported in village Tumudibandh,Mahabali,Kurtipara, Kadapana, Bilamal, Dhsi,Dhumamaska ,Mundi Maska,Paskari,Silduri,Kranjikona, Jhiripani,Lankagarh, Batipara, etc. of Tumudibandha and Kotagarh block.
MANGANESE : In village Karlangi in Belghar P.S and in Sirkajodi 10 Kms. North-East of Gochhapada.
COAL : The deposit is reported in Katringia and Gochhapada area of Phulbani Tahasil (Matighati and Belpadar)
BAUXITE : The deposit is reported in Annamani Plateau and Purunakatak plateau in Belghar P.S and in village Pabangaon and Sutaghati in Kotagarh P.S
CHINA CLAY : The deposit is reported in Matrugaon and Bilamal under Belghar P.S and in village K.Nuagam of Balliguda Tahasil.
LIME STONE : The deposit is reported in village Mundapadar of Danga R.F.
SEMI PRECIOUS STONE
1. CHRYSO-BERYL : Deposit of Chryso-beryl cat's Eye has been proved in village Dupi by the Directorate of Mining & Geology,Orissa, Bhubaneswar. Some other locations of Sanjhiripani,Jhiripani,Nuagaon and Bhandarangi have been reported in past to possess Cat's Eye.
2. ACQUIMARINE : In Phulbani Tahasil some locations at Sudrukumpa,Patiamba,Mallikpada, Badiguda, Panisala, Kakendri, Balibadi and Duguda mostly in Reserve Forest are reported to have Acqamarine.

PROSPECTING LICENCE EXISTING IN KANDHAMAL DISTRICT : At present there is no prospecting licence exists in Kandhamal district.
BENEFICATION PLANT : There are two Graphite Benefication plants situated in Kandhamal district. Out of which one plant is situated at Madaguda R.F. and another at village Dhurisa under Belghar P.S.
